Appropriate Prepositions — Primary Teacher

ইংরেজিতে অনেক Verb, Adjective, Noun ও Phrase-এর পরে নির্দিষ্ট Preposition ব্যবহৃত হয়। এই নির্দিষ্ট ও প্রচলিত Preposition-কে Appropriate Preposition বলা হয়।

Appropriate Preposition শেখার ক্ষেত্রে শুধু Preposition মুখস্থ না করে সম্পূর্ণ Expression-এর অর্থসহ শেখা বেশি কার্যকর। যেমন—
good at — কোনো কাজে দক্ষ
fond of — কোনো কিছু পছন্দ করা
depend on — নির্ভর করা
interested in — আগ্রহী হওয়া
responsible for — কোনো কাজ বা বিষয়ের জন্য দায়ী হওয়া

একই শব্দের সঙ্গে Preposition পরিবর্তিত হলে অর্থও পরিবর্তিত হতে পারে। তাই word + preposition-কে একটি একক grammatical unit হিসেবে মনে রাখা প্রয়োজন।

Abide by — মেনে চলা
Students should abide by the rules.

Abhorrent to — ঘৃণ্য বা বিরক্তিকর হওয়া
Corruption is abhorrent to an honest person.

Abound in — কোনো স্থানে কোনো কিছু প্রচুর থাকা
The river abounds in fish.

Abound with — কোনো কিছু দিয়ে পূর্ণ থাকা
The river abounds with fish.

Absent from — অনুপস্থিত থাকা
He was absent from the meeting.

Absorbed in — গভীরভাবে নিমগ্ন থাকা
She is absorbed in her studies.

Abstain from — বিরত থাকা
Everybody should abstain from harmful habits.

Accede to — কোনো অনুরোধ বা প্রস্তাবে সম্মত হওয়া
He acceded to my request.

Acceptable to — কারও কাছে গ্রহণযোগ্য
The proposal is acceptable to us.

Access to — প্রবেশাধিকার
Students have access to the library.

According to — অনুসারে
According to the report, the project is complete.

Account for — কারণ ব্যাখ্যা করা
He could not account for his absence.

Account with — কোনো ব্যাংক বা প্রতিষ্ঠানের সঙ্গে হিসাব থাকা
He has an account with the bank.

Accused of — অভিযুক্ত
The man was accused of theft.

Acquit of — অভিযোগ থেকে অব্যাহতি দেওয়া
The court acquitted him of the charge.

Adapt to — নতুন অবস্থা বা পরিবেশের সঙ্গে মানিয়ে নেওয়া
She quickly adapted to the new environment.

Addicted to — আসক্ত
He is addicted to gambling.

Adhere to — দৃঢ়ভাবে মেনে চলা
You should adhere to your principles.

Adjacent to — সংলগ্ন
The building is adjacent to the school.

Admit of — সুযোগ বা অবকাশ রাখা
His conduct admits of no excuse.

Afraid of — ভয় পাওয়া
The child is afraid of dogs.

Agree to — কোনো প্রস্তাব বা পরিকল্পনায় সম্মতি দেওয়া
He agreed to the proposal.

Agree with — কোনো ব্যক্তির সঙ্গে একমত হওয়া
I agree with you.

Akin to — সদৃশ বা সমজাতীয়
His idea is akin to mine.

Aim at — লক্ষ্য করা
The hunter aimed at the target.

Alive to — কোনো বিষয় সম্পর্কে সজাগ থাকা
We must be alive to the danger.

Allergic to — কোনো কিছুর প্রতি অ্যালার্জিযুক্ত বা বিরূপ
He is allergic to dust.

Alternative to — বিকল্প
There is no alternative to hard work.

Amenable to — বশযোগ্য বা যুক্তি গ্রহণে প্রস্তুত
The student is amenable to reason.

Angry at — কোনো ঘটনা বা কারণে রাগান্বিত
He was angry at the result.

Angry for — কোনো কাজের কারণে রাগ করা
She was angry with him for being late.

Angry with — কোনো ব্যক্তির ওপর রাগ করা
I am angry with him.

Annoyed with — কোনো ব্যক্তির ওপর বিরক্ত
She was annoyed with her brother.

Annoyed for — কোনো কারণের জন্য বিরক্ত
She was annoyed with him for his behaviour.

Answerable to — কারও কাছে জবাবদিহি করা
The officer is answerable to the authority.

Antipathy to / towards — তীব্র বিরাগ
He has an antipathy to dishonesty.

Apathy towards — অনীহা
He shows apathy towards his studies.

Anxious about — কোনো বিষয় নিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন
She is anxious about the examination.

Anxious for — কারও জন্য উদ্বিগ্ন বা আকুল
His parents are anxious for him.

Apart from — পৃথক, ছাড়া
They have never lived apart from their parents.

Apology to — কারও কাছে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা
He offered an apology to his teacher.

Apology for — কোনো কাজের জন্য ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা
He apologized for his mistake.

Appeal to — কারও কাছে আবেদন করা
They appealed to the authority.

Appeal for — কোনো কিছুর জন্য আবেদন করা
They appealed for help.

Appetite for — ক্ষুধা বা প্রবল আকাঙ্ক্ষা
The patient has little appetite for food.

Apply to — কোনো ব্যক্তি বা প্রতিষ্ঠানের কাছে আবেদন করা
He applied to the principal.

Apply for — কোনো পদ বা সুবিধার জন্য আবেদন করা
She applied for the job.

Appointed to — কোনো পদে নিযুক্ত
He was appointed to the post.

Appointment with — কারও সঙ্গে সাক্ষাতের নির্ধারিত সময়
I have an appointment with the doctor.

Aptitude for — কোনো বিষয়ে স্বাভাবিক যোগ্যতা
She has an aptitude for music.

Argue against — কোনো বিষয়ের বিপক্ষে যুক্তি দেওয়া
He argued against the proposal.

Argue over — কোনো বিষয় নিয়ে তর্ক করা
They argued over the matter.

Argue with — কোনো ব্যক্তির সঙ্গে তর্ক করা
Do not argue with your parents.

Argue about — কোনো বিষয় নিয়ে তর্ক করা
They argued about the problem.

Arrive at — ছোট স্থান বা নির্দিষ্ট গন্তব্যে পৌঁছানো
They arrived at the station in time.

Ascend to — উপরের দিকে ওঠা
He ascended to the top of the hill.

Ascend from — কোনো স্থান থেকে ওপরে ওঠা
Smoke ascended from the chimney.

Ashamed of — লজ্জিত
He is ashamed of his conduct.

Ask about — কোনো বিষয়ে জানতে চাওয়া
She asked about the result.

Ask for — কোনো কিছু চাওয়া
He asked for help.

Assure of — কাউকে কোনো বিষয়ে নিশ্চিত করা
I assured him of my support.

At lunch — দুপুরের খাবারের সময়
They discussed the matter at lunch.

At stake — ঝুঁকির মধ্যে
Many lives are at stake.

At the bottom of — কোনো কিছুর নিচের অংশে
The answer is at the bottom of the page.

At the fork — রাস্তার মোড়ে বা বিভাজনে
Turn left at the fork.

At the sight of — দেখামাত্র বা দেখে
She became frightened at the sight of the snake.

At the weekend — সপ্তাহান্তে
We shall meet at the weekend.

Attend on — সেবা করা
Nurses attend on patients.

Attend to — মনোযোগ দেওয়া
Students should attend to their lessons.

Authority on — কোনো বিষয়ে বিশেষজ্ঞ
He is an authority on English grammar.

Authority over — কারও ওপর কর্তৃত্ব
Parents have authority over their children.

Averse to — বিরূপ বা অনিচ্ছুক
He is averse to unnecessary change.

Aware of — সচেতন
You should be aware of the danger.

Avail oneself of — সুযোগ গ্রহণ করা
He availed himself of the opportunity.

Bad at — কোনো বিষয়ে দুর্বল
He is bad at mathematics.

Good at — কোনো বিষয়ে দক্ষ
She is good at English.

Believe in — বিশ্বাস স্থাপন করা
He believes in Allah.

Below poverty line — দারিদ্র্যসীমার নিচে
Many people live below the poverty line.

Beneficial to — উপকারী
Regular exercise is beneficial to health.

Bent on — কোনো কাজ করতে দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ
He is bent on achieving his goal.

Bias against — বিপক্ষে পক্ষপাত
A judge should have no bias against anyone.

Bias towards — কারও বা কিছুর পক্ষে পক্ষপাত
He has a bias towards his own team.

Blessed with — কোনো কিছু দ্বারা আশীর্বাদপ্রাপ্ত
They are blessed with a child.

Blind of — কোনো চোখে অন্ধ
He is blind of one eye.

Blind to — কোনো দোষ বা সত্য সম্পর্কে অন্ধ
She is blind to his faults.

Boast of — গর্ব করা
A wise person does not boast of success.

Break in — কথার মধ্যে বাধা দেওয়া
He broke in while they were speaking.

Breakdown of — বিভাজন বা বিশ্লেষণ
The report contains a breakdown of the data.

Bridge over — কোনো নদী বা প্রতিবন্ধকের ওপর সেতু
There is a bridge over the river.

Brood over — কোনো বিষয় নিয়ে অতিরিক্ত চিন্তা করা
Do not brood over past failures.

Burdened with — কোনো দায়িত্ব বা সমস্যায় ভারাক্রান্ত
He is burdened with heavy responsibilities.

Business with — কারও সঙ্গে ব্যবসা বা কাজের সম্পর্ক

Care for — পছন্দ করা বা যত্ন নেওয়া

Compare to — ভিন্ন ধরনের বস্তুর মধ্যে সাদৃশ্য দেখানো

Compare with — একই ধরনের ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা
Compare this result with the previous one.

Compatible with — সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ
The software is compatible with this device.

Compensate for — ক্ষতিপূরণ দেওয়া
He compensated me for the loss.

Competent for — কোনো কাজ বা পদের যোগ্য
He is competent for the post.

Complain to — কোনো ব্যক্তির কাছে অভিযোগ করা
She complained to the manager.

Complain about — কোনো বিষয় সম্পর্কে অভিযোগ করা
They complained about the service.

Comply with — নিয়ম বা নির্দেশ মেনে চলা
Everyone must comply with the rules.

Concern for — কারও জন্য উদ্বেগ

Concerned in — কোনো বিষয় বা ঘটনায় জড়িত

Confidence in — কারও বা নিজের সামর্থ্যের ওপর আস্থা

The duty was imposed on him.

Impute to — কোনো ব্যক্তির ওপর দায় বা উদ্দেশ্য আরোপ করা

Incapable of — কোনো কাজ করতে অক্ষম
He is incapable of telling a lie.

Incentive to — কোনো কাজের প্রেরণা
The prize is an incentive to hard work.

Indebted to — কারও কাছে ঋণী বা কৃতজ্ঞ
I am indebted to my teacher.

Independent of — স্বাধীন
She is independent of her parents.

Indifferent to — উদাসীন
He is indifferent to criticism.

Indispensable to — অত্যাবশ্যক
Water is indispensable to life.

Indulge in — কোনো কাজ বা অভ্যাসে অতিরিক্তভাবে লিপ্ত হওয়া

Inferior to — নিম্নমানের বা অধস্তন

Liberate from — মুক্ত করা

Liking for — পছন্দ

Light by — কোনো আলো দ্বারা আলোকিত
The room was lighted by electricity.

Long for — গভীরভাবে কামনা করা
Everyone longs for happiness.

Look at — তাকানো

Look for — খোঁজা
She is looking for a job.

Look into — তদন্ত করা
The police will look into the matter.

Look up — অভিধান বা তালিকায় খুঁজে দেখা
Look up the word in the dictionary.

Made of — মূল উপাদান চেনা যায় এমন বস্তু দিয়ে তৈরি
The ring is made of gold.

Made from — মূল উপাদানের রূপ পরিবর্তিত হয়ে তৈরি
Paper is made from wood.

Zeal for — কোনো কাজের প্রতি প্রবল উৎসাহ

১। Preposition একা মুখস্থ না করে সম্পূর্ণ collocation মুখস্থ করতে হবে। যেমন— fond of, insist on, prevent from, responsible for।

২। একই শব্দের সঙ্গে একাধিক Preposition থাকলে তাদের অর্থের পার্থক্য আলাদা করে শিখতে হবে। যেমন— responsible to এবং responsible for একই অর্থ প্রকাশ করে না।

৩। Person ও thing-এর পার্থক্য লক্ষ্য করতে হবে। যেমন— complain to a person কিন্তু complain about a matter।

৪। দুইজনের ক্ষেত্রে between এবং দুইয়ের বেশি হলে সাধারণত among ব্যবহারের নিয়ম মনে রাখতে হবে।

৫। senior, junior, superior, inferior প্রভৃতি comparative অর্থ প্রকাশ করলেও এদের পরে than নয়, to ব্যবহৃত হয়।

৬। prefer-এর পরে তুলনায় to ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন— I prefer tea to coffee.

৭। prevent, refrain, desist, debar, discourage প্রভৃতি Verb-এর সঙ্গে from ব্যবহারের প্রবণতা বেশি।

৮। fond, guilty, proud, capable বা incapable, innocent, ashamed প্রভৃতির সঙ্গে of ব্যবহারের বিষয়টি আলাদা করে মনে রাখা উপকারী।

৯। good এবং bad-এর পরে দক্ষতা বোঝালে at ব্যবহৃত হয়।

১০। কোনো শব্দের অর্থ না বুঝে শুধু Preposition মুখস্থ করলে ভুলের সম্ভাবনা বেশি। তাই প্রতিটি Expression অন্তত একটি ছোট Example Sentence-সহ অনুশীলন করা উচিত।
