এ অধ্যায়ের পাঠ্যসূচী
While ও When যুক্ত Sentence
Rules of Sentences Joined by While and When
While ও when সাধারণত দুটি clause-এর সময়গত সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করে। একই সময়ে চলমান কাজ এবং কোনো মুহূর্তে সংঘটিত কাজ বোঝাতে tense নির্বাচন বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Rule 1: Present time
বর্তমান সময়ের দুটি কাজ while বা when দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে একটি clause-এ চলমান কাজ বোঝাতে Present Continuous এবং অন্য clause-এ সাধারণ বা অভ্যাসগত কাজ বোঝাতে Present Indefinite ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।

উদাহরণ:
Don't make a noise while your father is sleeping.

Rule 2: Past time
অতীতে একটি কাজ চলার সময় অন্য একটি কাজ ঘটে থাকলে চলমান কাজটি সাধারণত Past Continuous এবং হঠাৎ সংঘটিত বা সম্পন্ন কাজটি Past Indefinite হয়।

উদাহরণ:
We were watching the news when the telephone rang.
Nasima arrived while I was cooking the dinner.

Rule 3: Reduced while-clause
While-এর পর Subject এবং finite verb থাকলে অতীতের চলমান কাজ বোঝাতে Past Continuous ব্যবহার করা যায়। কিন্তু Subject বাদ দিয়ে reduced form তৈরি করলে সাধারণত verb-এর সঙ্গে -ing যুক্ত হয়।

উদাহরণ:
While his brother was discussing the effects of pollution, Rahim argued against war.
While walking in the garden, I saw a snake.
Conditional Sentence
শর্তযুক্ত বাক্য
যে বাক্যে একটি কাজ বা ফল অন্য একটি শর্ত পূরণের ওপর নির্ভর করে, তাকে Conditional Sentence বলা হয়। সাধারণত if যুক্ত clause শর্ত প্রকাশ করে এবং অন্য clause ফল বা পরিণতি প্রকাশ করে।

Conditional Sentence প্রধানত দুই ভাগে আলোচনা করা যায়—
১। Real Conditional Sentence
২। Unreal Conditional Sentence
Real Conditional Sentence
বাস্তব বা বাস্তবসম্ভব শর্ত
যে শর্ত বাস্তবে পূরণ হওয়া সম্ভব বা সাধারণ সত্য প্রকাশ করে, তাকে Real Conditional বলা হয়। এখানে সাধারণত Past Tense ব্যবহার করা হয় না।

First Real Condition
ভবিষ্যতে বাস্তবসম্ভব কোনো শর্ত বোঝাতে if-clause-এ Present Indefinite এবং principal clause-এ Future Indefinite ব্যবহৃত হয়।

গঠন:
If + Present Indefinite + Future Indefinite

উদাহরণ:
If you come, I shall go.
If he wants to play the violin, I shall play the piano for him.

Future Indefinite-এর জন্য সবসময় will বা shall থাকা বাধ্যতামূলক নয়; প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী অন্য ভবিষ্যৎ অর্থবোধক গঠনও থাকতে পারে।

Second Real Condition
বৈজ্ঞানিক সত্য, প্রাকৃতিক সত্য এবং সর্বজনস্বীকৃত সত্য বোঝাতে উভয় clause-এ Present Indefinite ব্যবহৃত হয়। একে অনেক সময় Zero Conditional-ও বলা হয়।

গঠন:
If + Present Indefinite + Present Indefinite

উদাহরণ:
If you heat water to \(100^\circ\mathrm{C}\), it boils.
If a ruby is heated, it temporarily loses its colour.
Unreal Conditional Sentence
অবাস্তব বা অসম্ভব শর্ত
যে শর্ত বাস্তবে সত্য নয়, বর্তমানে ঘটছে না, অথবা অতীতে আর পূরণ করার সুযোগ নেই—সেসব ক্ষেত্রে Unreal Conditional ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Unreal Conditional-এর First Condition
বর্তমান বা ভবিষ্যৎ সম্পর্কে কল্পিত, অসম্ভব বা বাস্তবতার বিপরীত শর্ত প্রকাশ করতে if-clause-এ Past Indefinite এবং main clause-এ would, could বা might-এর পর verb-এর base form ব্যবহৃত হয়।

গঠন:
If + Past Indefinite + Subject + would/could/might + Verb-এর base form

উদাহরণ:
If you came, I would go.
If I were a bird, I would fly to you.

বিশেষভাবে মনে রাখতে হবে, Unreal Conditional-এ be verb-এর ক্ষেত্রে সব Subject-এর সঙ্গে were ব্যবহার করা প্রচলিত।

উদাহরণ:
If I were you, I would love you.
If I were you, I would handle the situation more carefully.

Unreal Conditional-এর Second Condition
অতীতে কোনো কাজ বা শর্ত পূরণ হয়নি এবং এখন আর তা পরিবর্তন সম্ভব নয়—এমন ক্ষেত্রে if-clause-এ Past Perfect এবং main clause-এ would have, could have বা might have-এর পর Past Participle ব্যবহৃত হয়।

গঠন:
If + Past Perfect + Subject + would have/could have/might have + Verb-এর Past Participle

উদাহরণ:
If you had come, I would have gone.
If I had known you were coming, I would have gone to the station.
Conditional Sentence-এর বিশেষ নিয়ম
Inversion and Special Structures
Unreal Conditional-এর Past Perfect গঠনে কখনো if বাদ দিয়ে Had বাক্যের শুরুতে আনা যায়। অর্থের কোনো পরিবর্তন হয় না।

গঠন:
Had + Subject + Verb-এর Past Participle + Subject + would have/could have + Verb-এর Past Participle

উদাহরণ:
Had I known in advance, I would have taken enough money.

If-clause বাক্যের শুরু বা শেষে থাকতে পারে। এর অবস্থান পরিবর্তিত হলেও মূল tense-এর নিয়ম পরিবর্তিত হয় না।

উদাহরণ:
If you come, I shall go.
I shall go if you come.

If you came, I would go.
I would go if you came.

If you had come, I would have gone.
I would have gone if you had come.

In case, unless, until
কিছু ক্ষেত্রে if-এর পরিবর্তে in case, unless, until ইত্যাদি conjunction শর্ত প্রকাশ করতে পারে। এ ধরনের clause-এ ভবিষ্যৎ অর্থ থাকলেও সাধারণত Present form ব্যবহৃত হয়।

উদাহরণ:
Give her a telephone number to ring in case she gets lost.
